The Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport was elected Europe’s best airport in the category of 5 to 15 million passengers per year. The ranking was determined by Airports Council International, an international professional association of airport operators representing more than 500 airports in 45 countries that handle more than 90% of Europe’s air traffic and over 1.9 billion passengers yearly. The award was part of the 2016 Airport Service Quality (ASQ) awards study, a passenger satisfaction survey program. The study results are based on questionnaires filled out by passengers who are asked to rate 34 indicators, such as airport services, waiting time, employee courtesy, cleanliness of the facilities, comfort and other aspects. In this evaluation, the Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport was also voted the 3rd best in Europe in the category of airports with more than two million passengers. In a press release, Jorge Ponce de Leão, the president of ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal, the company that manages Portugal’s airports, stated that he felt “very proud” when he read the news. “We were informed that, once again, we were selected by our passengers as one of Europe’s best airports. These awards also reveal that we are implementing the right strategy in our commitment to awareness-raising and mobilisation measures for staff and service providers to ensure ongoing improvement of passenger service quality,” said the president of ANA. In addition to this distinction, the city of Porto was also recently selected the "Best European Destination 2017" by European Best Destination.
